From the Longhouses of the Iroquois to Little Tree’s World Sometimes a book touches us not only with its words but also with the spirit of the people it carries within. Sonia Bleeker’s Indians of the Longhouse , published in 1950, was exactly such a work for me. Enriched with Althea Karr’s illustrations, this book vividly brought to life the daily existence, social order, and traditions of the Iroquois people . It is impossible not to feel admiration while reading it. Longhouses were not merely shelters; they were the very heart of a social order. A life where descent passed through the mother, where communal property was valued, and where peace was maintained through a confederation system… The more one thinks about it, the clearer it becomes how balanced a system they had established compared to the chaos of the modern world.
